    Scope of the Workshop
India continues to be one of the fastest growing mobile markets with nearly 300 million subscribers - thanks to fierce competition in 2G services. The mobile user base grew 25 times in the last five years making it second largest wireless market in the world after China. Launching of the next generation mobile service has been eagerly awaited, looked upon not so much as a luxury but more as a necessity because broadband wireless network capable of carrying voice and data at reasonable rates to vast portions of India is indispensible for creating a national information infrastructure. The wait is over as India on August 1, 2008, joined the elite list of countries to announce a policy for third generation mobile service that will enable customers to enjoy voice, video, data, and downloading facilities on their mobile phones.
This workshop aims at creating awareness about the details of the 3G systems: technologies, capabilities, proposals for standard. As such it would be oriented towards students and researchers in the area of wireless communication. Professionals and practicing engineers would also find the workshop a useful medium for refreshing their knowledge-base.
