Summer School Techniques for Design, Fabrication and Computation of Integrated Circuits (TECHNOMICS-12)

About The School

The Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics of the University of Calcutta, a UGC Networking Resource Centre in Physical Sciences in India, had organized a Summer School on “Techniques for Design, Fabrication and Computation of Integrated Circuits (TECHNOMICS-12)” during May 23-June 13, 2012.
The purpose of the school was to impart training to participants on the various aspects of the physics, design issues, fabrication and computation of MOS Transistor devices and integrated circuits, know about applications and find research directions in integrated circuits.

A number of theoretical lecture sessions were conducted to familiarize the participants with the topic and to introduce them to various advanced topics. Simultaneously, laboratory sessions were conducted so that the participants obtained in-depth hands-on experience in the design and computational issues of integrated circuits using several advanced softwares. The purpose of the school was also to help young teachers build infrastructural facilities for advanced teaching in practical courses of M.Tech students and in project works of both M.Tech and B.Tech students in the area of integrated circuits.

Inaugural Function

The registration of the candidates for the Summer School was held at 10.30 am on 23.05.2012 at the A.K.Choudhury Auditorium of the University. This was followed by the inaugural function. Prof. Susanta Sen, Ex Dean, Faculty of Technology, CU and Coordinator, CAS, IRPE, Prof. A.Maitra, HOD, IRPE, Prof. S.Kar, Prof. J.B.Roy and Dr. A. Biswas graced the occasion. Prof. A.Maitra introduced the participants to the long heritage of research and education in the University and faculty of technology. Dr. S.Sen described how the department was selected as the UGC-NRCPS and the proposed activities of the Networking Resource Centre. Prof. S. Kar delivered a motivating lecture to the participants. Dr. A.Biswas spoke on the purpose and utility of the Summer School TECHNOMICS. Finally, the course director, Dr. S.Pandit offered a vote of thanks.

Feedback from Participants

All the speakers prepared their lecture materials as power point presentation and the materials were stored in a USB Drive and handed over to the Participants in the valedictory session. Feedback forms were distributed amongst all the participants inviting comments about course content, method of presentation, choice of speakers, whether the course material would be helpful for their research and/or development of curriculum in UG/PG levels, overall performance of the school and whether they would encourage their colleagues and students to visit the UGC-NRCPS in IRPE. Questions were also asked about the hall management, distribution of notes, access to other facilities etc. The feedback response indicates that the participants were fully satisfied with the school activities. Some participants however expected some additional topics related to their research should be covered.

Selection of Candidates

The aim and scope of the Summer School was detailed in a poster displayed in the Institute’s website ( as well as in the university website ( in which the registration form was included for intending participants for online registration. The printed poster and its soft copies were sent by post and e-mail to nearly 75 institutions at different parts of India. The intending participants were asked to write a paragraph in the registration form regarding his/ her interest, field of teaching and research, if any, and also their motivation to undertake the course. The submitted registration forms were examined and a list of selected candidates was published on the website to enable them to book for train/air tickets. Due considerations were given to select participants from all over India. Selected applicants from Young Faculties, Research Scholars and advanced students from different parts of India were registered participants for this school. It may be noted that in accordance with Govt. of India rules, SC/ST candidates had been selected.
