Summer School on Photonics : Systems, Modeling Approach and Recent Trends (PhotoSmart-2010)

About The School

The Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics of the University of Calcutta, a UGC Networking Resource Centre in Physical Sciences in India, has organized a Summer School on “Photonics – Simulation Approaches and Research Trends (PhotoSMART)” during June 1-18, 2010. The purpose of the school was to impart training to participants from which they would learn the underlying physical processes of photonics, have detailed understanding of semiconductor photonic devices and systems, know about applications and find research directions in photonics. The school was equipped with theoretical lectures as well as laboratory sessions and the purpose of the school was also to help young teachers build infrastructural facilities for advanced teaching in practical courses of M. Tech. students and in Project works of both B.Tech. and M. Tech students in the area of photonics. Selected applicants from Young Faculties and Research Scholars from different parts of India were registered participants for this school.

The main Activity of the school is to organize and train faculty, researchers, Ph.D. students in the areas of expertise of the faculties of the Centre, by allowing the visitors to share equipment, library, internet and other infrastructures.

Areas to be covered in PhotoSMART
Basics of Photonics, Optical Process in Semiconductors, Optoelectronic Materials and Devices, Devices and components for Fibre-Optic Communication Systems, Growth and Fabrication Aspects, MOEMS, Biophotonics, Nanophotonics, Medical Photonics, Laboratory work on Optical Fibre Communication System, use of Software.

The students of the organizing department were given opportunity to attend all the theoretical lectures delivered by experts. The lectures in the school were broadly divided into three categories in three weeks. In the first week, emphasis was given on the Basics of Semiconductor Devices and Optical Processes in Semiconductors, the second dealt with the Devices and Components as used in a Photonic System and the third week was mainly on the Applications of Photonics in various fields. The resource persons were from different Academic Institutions and Research Organisations of India including faculties from the organizing department (IRPE).

Inaugural Function

On 1st June, 2010 The Function was inaugurated in the presence of Prof. P. K. Basu the Director Of the UGC-NRC, Prof N. R. Das the Course Co-Ordinator, Dr. B. Mukhopadhyay the joint Course Co-Ordinator.


A visit to some research laboratories (Semiconductor growth, Electrical and Optical Characterization) of the University was arranged for the participants in one weekend. In another weekend, a bus-tour was arranged for the participants to visit Shantiniketan, Vishva-Bharati.

Selection of Candidates

The submitted registration forms were examined and a list of selected fellows was published in the website to enable them to reserve train/air tickets. Due consideration was given to select participants from all over India and to give preference to candidates from North Eastern regions. The following Table may provide an idea how the objective was fulfilled.
